Episode 58: Twitter Exit

On this week’s episode, we talk about the toxic hell-hole that is X, formerly known as Twitter, and why we left it. Or, more accurately, one of us left it.

In particular, we talk about how awful it’s gotten since Apartheid Baby took over, and how the site has virtually no meaningful content moderation. And it’s not because there are too many users or because X can’t effectively moderate the site for practical reasons. It’s because they don’t want to. They want the site to be as toxic as possible. And so it is.

We also talk about the recent spate of deadly hurricanes and the misinformation that followed. Nothing like politicizing tragedies when your party made them worse than they had to be.

Finally, we begin our discussion of the Netflix documentary, Will & Harper, which is great but challenging in some ways. More on that in our next episode, but you should definitely watch it and tune in for our conversation.

So, we hope you enjoy the show, please feel free to follow us on Instagram (@jenn_and_dave), and we’ll talk to you soon.

Episode 41: The Reboot!

Yes, it’s been awhile since we posted our last episode on October 1, 2023. We’ve had a lot going on since then (mostly, the holidays) and we’ve given a lot of thought to whether we should continue the podcast, due in part to some of the flak we get online. But, in the end, we decided that we’re not going to let the haters dictate what we do and say.

So, we’re back. And this time we mean it.

Anyway, in this episode we talk about dealing with abuse on social media without losing your sanity. We’re not policing anybody’s posts, but sometimes the best thing to do is to simply not engage. You can mute the abusers, block them, or simply ignore their comments and get on with your life, but there’s no real upside to fighting with them. Post whatever you want, but consider what’s the sanest and best approach to dealing with people who get bent out of shape — because no matter what you post, it’s pretty much guaranteed that somebody’s going to get bent out of shape about it.

On a lighter note, we also talk about traveling back to Ireland (our third trip in three years) to see Bruce Springsteen again (for the second time in two years). Last year, you may recall, we split our time between Dublin and Sligo; this year we’re splitting our time between Dublin and Cork, Ireland’s second largest city. Should be a great trip!

So, we hope you enjoy the show, and please feel free to follow us on the site formerly known as Twitter. Our joint account is @JennandDave1 and the podcast account is @itsotetPodcast. Until next time!

Episode 32: Adventures in Social Media

With the launch of Meta’s new social networking platform, Threads, we dedicate this week’s episode to the good, the bad, and the ugly of social media.

As Twitter circulates slowly down the drain (taking TweetDeck with it, apparently), we discuss the toxicity of that platform and whether Threads is a viable alternative. We also talk about the relationship between Threads and Instagram, our own various social media accounts, and learning how to deal with trolls — including one very angry, unemployed rage-aholic from Torrence, California — without losing your mind.

And speaking of our various accounts, you can follow us on:

So, please enjoy this week’s episode, feel free to share your thoughts in the comments, and, as always, support the rights of LGBTQIA people everywhere!

Episode 17: Being Part of the Conversation

We’re back after a long hiatus because, as we explain in this week’s episode, there is a conversation going on in the world, whether we like it or not, and good people have to be part of it.

It’s been a long time, and, frankly, after recording our last episode, we thought we might never come back. Last year saw one tragedy after another in a country that seemed to be increasingly polarized and defined by anger and extremism, especially on the right. From mass shootings to the Supreme Court overruling decades of precent and stripping away individual liberties to the ever more hostile environment in which marginalized people, and especially LGBTQIA people, find themselves, the stress at times was overwhelming.

Fighting this fight takes a toll, and trying weigh the stress of fighting it against the cost of ignoring it seems to present an impossible dilemma.

But, as we say, the conversation about individual rights and fundamental human dignity goes on with or without us, and without us, the voices of the lunatic fringe not only become louder, they become normalized and mainstream. Whether it’s Michael Knowles talking about “eradicating transgenderism” at CPAC, Matt Walsh and his fellow travelers obsessing over and spreading lies about gender-affirming care for trans people, or random unhinged Twitter users casually hurling the vilest accusations imaginable at parents and others who support LGBTQIA youth, there are times when decent people just have to speak up.

And so we’re back, and we hope to connect with good, decent, likeminded people who will join the conversation, too. Because we know they’re out there.

We may never strike the right balance between fighting back and living our lives in peace, but we’re not going to go quietly.

So, please enjoy to this week’s episode, feel free to share your thoughts in the comments, and, as always, support the rights of LGBTQIA people everywhere! And if you’re new here, you can also follow our Twitter account, @itsotetPodcast.
